It is clearly evident that today’s men are taking a much greater interest in their appearance. Through fashion and grooming, men are spending more time and money on their appearance, even though society has not traditionally accepted consumer masculinity. Fashion, beauty and image enhancement have long been the domain of women, and yet it has become increasingly acceptable for men to enter this territory. The purpose of this research was to identify factors that contributed to this trend as gender roles and norms continue to change in our society.
The first hypothesis proposed that consumer masculine tendencies would be more evident among those with a higher level of self-esteem, especially relating to appearance. Interestingly, consumer masculinity was significantly influenced by one's level of appearance-related self-esteem, but not by his or her overall self-esteem. Because of the many questions involving appearance in the consumer masculinity scale, it is not surprising that one's selfesteem resulting from satisfaction with appearance was highly correlated with consumer masculinity. In other words, those whose feelings are greatly affected by how they look tended to exhibit a stronger level of consumer masculinity.
One may also argue that appearance-related self-esteem is not a true indicator of sense of self-worth. This argument seems to be corroborated by the fact that appearance-related self-esteem was negatively correlated with overall self-esteem. The negative relation suggests that one's appearance-related self-esteem may be an indicator ofone's insecurities and a lack of true self-confidence. A noteworthy frnding, however, was that overall self-esteem was neither positively nor negatively related to consumer masculinity when appearance-related self-esteem was controlled. In summar}, consumer masculinity cannot be predicted by a level of overall self-esteem, but by appearance-related self-esteem.
