很久很久以前，有个小偷从一个农夫家里偷了一包钱，这个农夫去找法官，请他帮助自己。法官命令农场里所有的人都来到他面前。他拿出一些长度一样的小木棍，每个人分了一根。然后说：“你们明天再来找我，到时候我就知道谁是小偷了，因为小偷拿的那根小木棍会比其他人的长1英寸。”那个小偷害怕被发现，所以他把自己拿的小木棍切掉了1英寸。
第二天大家发现小偷拿的小木棍比其他人的短了1英寸。
法官找到了真正的小偷并把他送进了监狱。
