7]“I have had nearly fifteen years of education in Chinese schools,in which I have been used to the teacher?centered class.It is the traditional way of teaching in China,which is characterized by the one?man show and the absolute authority of teachers.Students are supposed to listen,to take notes,and to complete timely all the assignments given by the teacher.My international teacher brought in quite a different style of teaching,which makes students the center of the classroom.In his class we were free to raise questions and to express our thoughts.He encouraged us to think,to doubt,and to object.We had lots of discussions,which is quite rare in Chinese classrooms.We feel relaxed and excited in his class.”
It would be wrong,however,to assume that communicative or student?centered teaching will solve the problem.In order to find out mismatches between learners’ and teachers’ views of what activities were important in a language class,Willing (1985a) investigated the learning preferences of more than five hundred learners.His study showed that activities that were popular with most students included pronunciation practice,explanations to the class,conversation practice,error correction,and vocabulary development.Unpopular activities were:listening to cassettes,self?discovery of error,using pictures,films and video,pair work and language games.Obviously learner style preference is not simply a matter of communicative versus traditional.Participants in a more recent study also reported man more instances of dissatisfaction with,even dread of,group work than instances of satisfaction” (Leki,2001).
