We add to this empirical literature on the association between market power and SME access to credit in several important ways.First,unlike the extant literature on competition and credit availability,our examination does not rely on concentration as our primary measure of market power.Several contributions to the banking literature during the last two decades have cast doubt on the consistency and robustness of concentration as an indicator of market power.Applications to the banking industry such as Shaffer (1993),Ribon and Yosha (1999) or Maudos and Fernández de Guevara (2004) have already shown that price to marginal costs indicators,such as the Lerner index,are much more robust measures of the exercise of bank market power and are frequently uncorrelated with concentration indicators.
