The rapid increase in the number of "left-behind children" has many experts worried.They pointed out that the educational level of adults supervising these children are in general not that high and often can only take care of the children's personal safety and daily living and unable to care for the children's educational,behavioral and spiritual needs.These children are often left to grow on their own.
"The younger the child,the greater and more important the child's need for an emotional support structure and the most important is that from the child's own parents.Problems with left-behind children to a large extent have to do with missing the emotional support of their parents." Chinese youth research center deputy chief and research fellow Sun Yunxiao propounded this view.
Sun Yunxiao pointed out that because of paucity of parental support,certain left-behind children will develop withdrawal moods and lack self-confidence.These children will show symptoms of stunted growth in physical and psychical manifestations when compared to their same-age peers,while some other left-behind children will have a tendency to lose control and the more serious among them turning out to become "problem youths",mainly because of inadequate supervision from their guardians.
Furthermore,"left-behind children" have numerous problems in their education.A survey conducted by Beijing Normal University shows that teachers typically render less assistance to "left-behind children" than to others.Many teachers regard these "left-behind children" as "inferior students" and those most likely to raise other's concern in schools.
The Chinese government is currently drumming up measures towards these "left-behind children",and is using legislative means to ensure that going forward,more Chinese migrant workers can choose to have their children by their side.In one of the meetings of China's legislative organizations last month,the Law Committee of the National People's Congress proposed a "draft of compulsory educational act" that requires local governments to give children of migrant workers equal educational opportunities .This would enable more migrant workers to bring their "left-behind children" to live by their side.
