Abstract:Basedon the conceptual metaphor theory from Lakoff & Johnson's cognitivelinguistics,this thesis selects the Ming Dynasty opera the Peony Pavilion as the research object,discusses itsclassification of the metaphor.The result points out that the metaphor in the Peony Pavilion including scenemetaphor,human metaphor,emotional metaphor and life metaphor.By usingmetaphors mentioned above,its description of scene and characters becomecomplement to each other,clearly showing the mood of the characters,whichenhances the content of literary works.The study of the metaphor in the Peony Pavilion provides a newperspective on the rich literature implication of appreciation of classicalopera of the Ming dynasty.

By selecting a Ming Dynasty opera “Peony Pavillion” as a study subject,this thesis attempts to explore the classification of metaphors from the perspective of Lakoff & Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory in Cognitive Linguistics.The study shows that many types of metaphors can be found in the opera which cover scenery,people,feelings and life.The combination of these metaphors mutually reinforces the characters and the scenarios in the opera,explicitly portrays their mental states,and effectively enhances the connotative quality of literary works.The study of metaphors in the opera “Peony Pavilion” is conducive to the appreciation of the rich literary implications of Ming Dynasty’s classical operas from a transforming perspective.
