What is going on with Italian football? It has not even been three years since the national team won the World Cup, but now it seems the country`s football is in crisis.
Last week, the three remaining Italian sides were all knocked out of the Champions League by English clubs.
Traditionally, Italy was always the country where the world`s best players would go to play. These days, even the top clubs have to rely on older, fading stars or the castoffs of English Premier League Teams.
Two of last week`s beaten Italian teams, Roma and Juventus, featured players not cinsidered good enough by the top English teams-players like John Arne Riise and Mohamed Sissoko. In fact, the Juventus manager, Claudio Ranieri, saw his team lose to Chelsea-the club that sacked him in 2004. Even when Italian teams sign bigname players, like Milan have recently done with Ronaldinho and David Beckham,it is only after they are well past their best.
But there is a flip side. Despite Italian clubs`struggles,Italy are still world champions. For all the dominance of Manchester Unid,Chelsea,Liverpool and Arsenal,England have not won the World Cup since 1966.
When it comes to the Italian Ieague, however, there`s now agreement that it has fallen behind its English rival.
"I think that in teams of infrastructure and sporting approach, they are just a bit better than us,”Roma manager Luciano Spalletti told The Telegraph after his side lost on penalties to Arsenal.
Roma`s captain,Francesco Totti, was in tears after the defeat. The 32-year-old has been a symbol of Italian football, and he was witnessed Italy`s decline first -hand.
The problem for Italy is that as star players have aged, there has not been enough young talent to replace them. But as Italian clubs struggle to pay the big money English teams can afford for the best players in football, they are forced to give youngsters a chance.
Inter Milan may have lost to Manchester United, for instance, but their team did feature two 18-year-old Italians. Playing in such an important match will be valuable experience for them in the future.
So,perhaps there`s hope for Italy yet. Many people think that football goes in cycles.
Italy was the dominant league for a long time during the 1990s,as was Spain in the early part of the 2000s. Now may be England`s time, but do not write off the Italians just yet.
