About the Exercise
This exercise is intended to provide experience at observing the eyes and their effect on other parts of the body.Eyes are always changing their shapes and positions,and portraitists need to be able to concentrate on the eyes and judge their appearance.Becoming proficient at this skill can be a major step in making the transformation form “shoot and hope” to “compose and shoot”
The two parts of the eyes that frequently go unnoticed are the size of the pupils and the position of the irises.Pay particular attention to both and do not release the shutter until you have consciously assessed their size and position.Also,pay attention to how the shape of the eyes change depending on which direction the head faces.
Which the exercise can be done in formal settings,it can also be done while people are engaged in reasonably sedentary activities,provided the purpose is to make a portrait,as opposed to documenting the activity.Examples of suitable activities are reading,watching an event,interacting with a pet,and listening to a friend.Make sure to perform the exercise in a situation where the eyes are engaged but the head does not move about much.
Setting Up the Exercise
Find a reasonably well lighted location with a good background where the model can sit or stand comfortably.It can be helpful if the model is engaged in an activity that does not require active watching,such as listening to someone on the telephone or smelling flowers.Otherwise,have the model look at near and far objects in various directions.Consciously note the shape of the eyes and position of the irises before you release the shutter.Also,check whether shadows or hair are falling in front of the eyes.
When finished,review the photographs and ascertain how well you photographed the eyes,as they appeared to you.Pay particular attention t how the eyes appear differently depending on whether they are viewed form the front,at an angle,or in profile.

Technical Considerations
The predominant technical consideration is to focus on the eyes.While portraits do not always require much depth of field,the eyes have to be rendered sharply to appear expressive.Depending on the background,you may want to use a shallow depth of field to isolate the model.Some backgrounds,such as bodies of water,can work well even when rendered sharply.Complex backgrounds,such as urban scenes,are usually better rendered blurry.One reason why fast lenses are well suited for portrait photography is that they can be used at or near wide open to produce very shallow depths of field.
