In terns of the number of marriages and divorces in the USA,the first graph shows the situation from 1970 to 2000.In 1970 the number of marriages is 2.5 million which remained steadily until 1980 while the divorces experienced an increase from 1 million to nearly 1.5 million.Thereafter,the number of marriages had a steadily decline and dropped at 2 million by 2000.Similarly,the number of divorces also decreased a lot from approximately 1.5 million in 1980 to 1 million in 2000.
Turning to the marital status of adult Americans between 1970 and 2000,the second chart contains sets of data which is about the percentage of people who never married,married,widowed and divorced.The percentage of people who never married in 1970 was around 13% and then it went up significantly and reached at 20% by 2000; and the people who had divorced had a dramatic increase and matched the peak at nearly 10%.In contrast,the ratio of the married people decreased from 70% in 1970 to below 60% in 2000.However,the rate of widowed remained steadily during these 30 years.
