Hundreds of wires traveling inside an excavator are removed by adopting the CAN controller on the local control board.
Following our approach,we analyzed electrical control systems of an excavator and integrated them into two controllers (an instrument controller and an engine–hydraulic controller) which can communicate with each other through the CAN.Fig.14 shows the control modules and test kits designed in this research.The two controllers govern the control signals scattered around the driver’s seat (an instrument controller) and the engine room (an engine–hydraulic controller),respectively.Some signals required for the other controller are sent to the controller through the CAN with high speed/reliability.For this communication,a packet is defined for the signals,identification codes,and error recovery codes in each module.We focused our research on the communication between two controllers,instead of spending more time on the control algorithm and interface design for the local control functions.Note that the I/O-related circuits should be designed not to cause noise or malfunctions.There are two special features in our design.First of all,the controller is mechanically compact and stable,since we used a memory and I/O device,instead of ROM,RAM,and I/O devices.The second advantage of this system is high communication reliability that is obtained by implementing the dual communication channels; one channel is used for normal operations and the other is saved as a spare or for emergency.
