地名研究在我国虽然有悠久的历史,但至今仍不能说地名学已经成熟.许多人对此并不熟知和了解.在我国少数以百万的古今地名中蕴含着丰富的文化内容.如果认真加以发掘和研究,从不同地区的地名,就可以看到不同的区域文化特征和历史文化成分.本文正是在这方面的一次尝试.

——Taking placename culture of Yining City as an example
Since ancient times, Xinjiang has been a multinational region, where different nationalities have populated. The nationalities have kept their own tradition and culture, speaking different languages, which makes one place polyonymous.
To know well a place, we should begin with its name. Placename is a mirror of ethno-culture, through which we can become conscious of life-customs and ethno-belief of different nationalities. A placename is a regional identifier, which reflects its local conditions and customs and its history culture to a certain extent.
Although it has a long history to study place names in our country, we cannot say that toponymy has been mature. Most of people don’t know very well about it. There are millions of place names at ancient and modern time in our country and all of them are full of civilization contents. As long as we can make an exploration and research seriously, we can find different regional culture feature and historical culture element judging from the place names in different regions.
